The Lynchburg District has an exciting career opportunity in our Halifax Residency Office which covers a two-county area (Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties). The Assistant Resident Engineer – Land Use position assists the Resident Engineer to ensure the coordination, integration, and management of VDOT resources and staff impacting a residency transportation program, which includes routine and emergency roadway maintenance and safety operations. The position serves as the focal point for services and primary contact/liaison for local governments on activities impacting the local geographic region, as well as administer VDOT land development activities under the advisory authority regarding land use policies, procedures and guidelines.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
Minimum Qualifications
• Skill in developing and managing effective relationships with employees, citizens and public officials.
• Experience applying civil engineering principles and practices to land development design, transportation construction and maintenance projects.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
• Experience with land use and development activities to include rezoning and public meetings.
• Valid driver's license.
• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Experience managing and directing activities related to staffing, budgeting, planning, prioritizing, scheduling, problem solving and training.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Safety shoes required in the field.
• Skill in the use of computers and software programs to include MS Office and engineering design software.
Additional Considerations
• Progressively responsible engineering and land development experience in a diversified transportation program.
• Progressively responsible experience managing a transportation maintenance program.
