Learning and Community Engagement Overview

The Learning and Community Engagement team, as part of the Museum Operations and Education department, at JYF focuses its efforts on learners of all ages through onsite student programming, public programming, outreach, and digital learning. The Learning Team—which works most closely with K-12 students and educators—is currently working on the implementation of a new interpretive plan that centers cultural connections, cultivating curiosity, and nurturing belonging. This team is integral to the transformation of student learning to embrace dialogue, empathy, cultural equity, and relevance. Over the next year, the learning team will be implementing newly developed guided tours with students and exploring opportunities to engage young learners (K-2) and secondary students more effectively.  

Job Duties

The Lead Educator will be responsible for planning, designing, organizing, and implementing guided and self-guided student activities, and engaging with homeschool and secondary audiences. Programs will be related to the agency’s strategic plan, interpretive plan, and initiatives. Lead Educators are responsible for developing and leading new hire training in conjunction with Education Specialists, creating engaging training opportunities for wage employees, mentoring wage staff, and ensuring that daily logistics of programming is clearly communicated and implemented. The person will need to be able to work calmly under shifting situations and pressures of a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in 17th/18th century history and how it relates to today
  • Knowledge of current educational methodologies
  • Experience with training adult learners and mentoring staff  
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Enjoys working with a diverse population of adults and children
  • Ability to learn and apply new information in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of or interest in program development
  • Experience in responding calmly and quickly to changes in plans, managing complex situations with students, visitors, and/or staff

Additional Considerations

Degree or relevant work experience in history, education, training, program development or a related field may be helpful
