Job Duties
Supervises or leads engineering functions for assigned regional area or office. The
Environmental Engineer Senior serves as a subject matter expert providing guidance
and expertise to other staff. Characteristics include: establishing priorities and
assigning work; auditing and approving other engineers' work; monitoring new and
improved facilities; evaluating project plans; conducting non-routine and final
inspections; interpreting regulations for operators, owners, and other staff;
evaluating and recommending revisions to local, state or national regulations;
facilitating implementation of regulations; supervising preparation of reports;
providing training and technical assistance to other staff and the public. Most
activities are handled independently with supervision required for only very large
projects or the most complex issues.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of sanitary engineering pertaining to drinking water; state and
federal laws, rules and regulations governing drinking water; management
practices and principles and administrative and supervisory principles
Ability to make sound engineering decisions; monitor and assess progress
and interpret and apply federal and state laws and regulations; create
technical reports
Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to maintain effective
working relationships with internal staff, officials, engineers and other public
health groups
Additional Considerations
Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) in
Virginia preferred
