Job Duties

NVMHI is a state psychiatric hospital currently seeking a primary care physician (PCP) for on-call phone coverage during nights, weekends and holidays, and possibly weekday or weekend on-site shifts. On-call responsibilities include taking phone calls from hospital nursing staff to address patient medical concerns, and medical clearance of prospective admissions. While on-call, the PCP will discuss the situation with the nurse, give orders as needed during the on-call shift, or initiate transfer to ED for an emergency. On-site functions include admission H&Ps, medical clearance of prospective admissions, and ongoing acute/chronic primary care management of psychiatric inpatients. Medical clearance involves reading through clinical information and labs/testing for exclusionary criteria, and communicating with Admissions Department if more information is required, or if there are concerns about appropriateness of the admission.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine is required.

Experience in the specialty area of family medicine, internal medicine, primary care or related specialty is required.

Additional Considerations

Experience with psychiatric patients preferred.

Board Certification is preferred.
