Job Duties
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Active Treatment Manager, working within the Office of Patient Clinical Services team to augment, implement, and support the mission and vision of DBHDS. The purpose of the position is to work with the state-operated behavioral health hospitals across the Commonwealth, assisting the nine state hospitals with further development of their active treatment programs, with the goal of patient engagement, increase in non-pharmacological treatment and interventions, and the development of skills to serve specialized populations, such as individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, personality disorders, and neurocognitive disorders, etc. The emphasis is to assist the system in ensuring patients receive effective, efficient, and individualized treatment, in order to ensure timely stabilization and community integration. This position will lead a team of individuals to work closely with state hospitals regarding all aspects of patient treatment provided as part of the inpatient stay, including clinical/therapy services, psychosocial rehabilitation, and other aspects of active treatment; to assist state hospitals to increase therapeutic opportunities for patients; further develop and enhance person-centered and trauma-informed care approaches; increase opportunities to implement interventions that may replace restrictive approaches such as seclusion and restraint; and assist staff in utilizing evidence-based models of treatment.
Additional responsibilities include:
• Ensuring staff are competent regarding active treatment approaches and models, as well as providing training in these areas to others.
• Monitoring the development of treatment programs and outcomes.
• Responding to inquiries, requests for information, and assistance from internal and external constituents.
• Preparation and analysis of reports.
• Reviewing of data to support ongoing quality improvement.
• Performing day-to-day administrative tasks that support clinical care within the state hospital settings.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge and expertise in contemporary best practices in behavioral health treatment, services, and supports for children, adolescents, and adults with complex mental illness and co-occurring disorders.
• Knowledge and expertise in coordinating the optimum utilization of resources for individuals who have experienced a behavioral health crisis.
• Ability to plan and administer short-term and long-term programmatic activities.
• Knowledge of data-based performance and outcomes measurements.
• Ability to provide strong leadership and management skills, including demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, motivate staff, and cultivate teamwork.
• Thorough understanding of the laws and process in Virginia surrounding ECOs, TDOs, civil commitment, and the various types of forensic court orders.
• Ability to apply recovery concepts and other constructs to service development, service delivery, and quality improvement approaches for individuals with complicated behavioral health, co-occurring, and comorbid conditions.
• Ability to apply knowledge and expertise to support timely, effective, and evidence-based care within the state hospital system.
• Thorough knowledge of various types of clinical and therapeutic treatment options and approaches and behavioral supports for children, adolescents, and adults.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong organization and time management skills in order to coordinate multiple projects, in addition to providing direct supervision in an individual and team setting.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in the behavioral field.
• Experience related to behavioral health disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, and neurocognitive disorders, with complicated behavioral health, co-occurring, and comorbid conditions, the problems associated with these conditions, and best practices for maintaining quality of life in the most integrated setting.
