Job Duties
Position contributes to the agency’s public safety mission through adult probationers' supervision, conduct investigations, and document activities of the target population of sexual offenders’ court or parole board ordered electronic/technological monitoring. To include other high risk offenders plus other violent or sexual offenders placed on electronic/technological monitoring by the Unit Head.
Probation Officers participate in Virginia Law Officers’ Retirement System (VaLORS), which is a defined benefit plan with enhanced benefits for hazardous duty. VaLORS participants are eligible to retire at age 60 with five years of creditable service or as early as age 50 with 25 years of creditable service. A reduced benefit is available at age 50 with five years of creditable service.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge in social casework and treatment methods/therapies; personality types, human behavioral tendencies, and socio-economic group characteristics. Grammar, composition, report writing, and information gathering; and presentation techniques. Working knowledge of Counseling and intervene in crises; assist probationer(s) to develop and attain goals; organize, summarize, and present information orally and in writing; manage time and prioritize work assignments to meet required time frames; gather, collate, and record information from personal interviews and written requests. Interact positively with probationers, colleagues, supervisors, the public, and community resource personnel; execute and follow through on probationers’ supervision plans and personal work assignments; give and receive guidance and instructions; process, analyze, and interpret written and oral information; initiate independent actions and carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
The selected candidate must be eligible and successfully obtain required VCIN certification.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Sociology/Social Work, Criminology, Administration of Justice and Public Safety or related field of study. Experience and skilled in Microsoft Office products.
