Job Duties

The IT Division at DPOR plays a crucial role in supporting the agency's mission across three key areas: equipping staff with technology solutions, ensuring information security compliance, and collaborating with business units to deliver effective IT solutions. As an IT Generalist, you will contribute to DPOR's IT Division's Organizational Objectives by applying advanced project management and IT skills. This role involves overseeing day-to-day operations, implementing IT changes, and ensuring compliance with information security standards.
DPOR's IT Division provides critical support in three areas that enable the agency to perform its mission.
Those three areas are:

1) Equipping DPOR staff by responsively and responsibly meeting their technology needs in way enables the staff to work effectively and efficiently

2) Helping implement and support an information security program that secures DPOR’s IT assets and its mission critical systems and data by complying with Commonwealth, DPOR and other appropriate information security requirements and policies

3) Partnering with business areas to deliver, operate, maintain, and adapt IT solutions

As part of The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you will play a critical role in the economic vitality of Virginia by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields. DPOR is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state laws and regulations.

TELEWORK OPTIONS: Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 90 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have the following:

- Working knowledge of information security standards, policies and procedures and the incorporation of these into IT operations
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective and responsive customer service to groups/customers served
- Moderate analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented
- Ability to communicate effectively (including the ability to negotiate and persuade) both in electronic, written and oral means at all levels within and across agencies and with vendors and vendor staff.
- Some ability to delegate tasks while at the same time being responsible to ensure that all tasks are completed with a high level of quality
- Some ability to lead / inspire staff and enable IT staff to accomplish goals regardless of whether the staff report directly to this position
- Some ability to model, mentor, train and teach others and produce / provide valuable, practical documentation and resources that aid to this end
- Some ability to accurately estimate work effort and deliver to those estimates
- Some ability to foresee issues and problems and recommend options for addressing
- Ability to work with cross-functional and external groups effectively
