Job Duties
Position contributes to the public safety mission by directing daily activities of security supervisors and support staff as shift commander in an institutional setting. Coordinates and reviews the work of others on assigned shift to ensure a safe, secure, and productive environment. Leads, develops, and counsels staff. Responsible for work schedules, duty rosters and performance management system for staff. Conducts ongoing inspections to ensure compliance with security post audit, policies and procedures governing all aspects of institutional operations. Interacts with management, staff, visitors, inmates and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Operator’s License. Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification. Extensive working knowledge of departmental policies, institutional policies, operating practices, procedures, and inmate programs.
Progressive security working experience within the Virginia Department of Corrections. Extensive experience in the supervision of corrections staff. Experience planning, scheduling, and/or organizing work for others to include timekeeping and duty roster management.
Demonstrated working knowledge of practices and procedures governing security and/or administration. Ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Working knowledge in the use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.
Additional Considerations
LEAD Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office Programs. Knowledge and experience with Evidence Based Practices.
