The Salem District Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking applicants for the position of Structural Engineer in the District’s Structure & Bridge Section. The selected candidate will apply sound engineering principles in designing and detailing plans for structure and bridge construction and repairs and insure bridge construction or repairs are accurate, functionally feasible, economical and as safe as possible. In this role they will check statically determinate and indeterminate bridge structures of concrete and steel to meet alignment, dimension, strength and economic requirements using AASHTO LRFD specifications to prepare plans; compute dimensions and quantities of material; and provide construction support by assisting Senior Engineers with field reviews and redesigns to fit unanticipated field conditions. In addition, this position will serve as a project manager for multiple bridge projects and may be designated as the “bridge coordinator” responsible for reviewing and coordinating review responses to plans prepared by private firms and in-house staff.

Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

*Knowledge of principals of civil engineering, knowledge of bridge design, construction,
inspection, maintenance and repair practices and policy.
*Able to perform computer-aided design and drafting, planning and scheduling; ability to
compute dimensions and quantities of material.
*Ability to perform field inspections to determine work required and interpret bridge safety
inspection reports.
*Ability to provide construction support by assisting district bridge engineer with field reviews
and redesigns to fit unanticipated field conditions.
*Identify and diagnose causes of deterioration and damage to structures, ability to compile data and prepare reports and perform structural analysis.
*Skill and ability to positively interact with employees, citizens and government officials

Additional Considerations

*B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field.
*EIT or PE license preferred.
*Experience managing multiple projects
