The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.
The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of:
Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.
VDOT is seeking a Superintendent for the Bedford Structure and Bridge section. As the qualified candidate, you will plan and direct the structure and bridge repair, maintenance, and replacement program for a geographical area consistent with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operational standards.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of budgets, cost estimates, and inventory management.
• Ability to effectively resolve citizen complaints and other issues successfully.
• Ability to gather data, conduct research, and create reports and correspondence.
• Valid driver's license.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Considerable knowledge of structure and bridge maintenance methods, procedures, practices, and equipment.
• Knowledge of supervisory principles, policies and practices and experience to manage supervisory and crew personnel.
• Ability to schedule, plan, and monitor work activities.
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Additional Considerations
• Possession of valid CDL and DOT medical card.
• Experience preparing cost estimates, developing budgets, tracking costs and preparing project reports.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
• Experience with procurement, inventory and equipment management and computer programs.
• Experience in maintenance and construction of bridges, culverts and other highway structures. Supervisory experience in a maintenance and construction environment.
• Experience managing performance and applying progressive discipline.
• Experience developing, planning, scheduling and overseeing construction or bridge maintenance projects.

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
