Job Duties
Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for a full-time Financial Accountant. The incumbent, reporting directly to the Institute’s Assistant Director of Finance and Budget, and performs the following types of activities:
• Assist with year-end financial statements, footnotes and attachments for timely submission as prescribed by the Department of Accounts and the Auditor of Public Accounts.
• Various tasks in support of the accuracy of the Institute’s accounting system requiring comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and sound decision making based upon a formal body of knowledge regarding accounting concepts, methods, procedures and controls.
• Direct implementation of new or revised governmental financial reporting regulations and directives such as new GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board) pronouncements.
• Assist in planning, organizing, implementing and controlling fiscal activities to include receipt and disbursement of Institute funds and the recommendation, development and implementation of internal accounting policies, procedures and controls to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and accounting standards.
• Reconcile various Institute accounts and internal accounting records to the Commonwealth’s comprehensive accounting system.
• Prepare capital project accounting for construction projects and assist with year-end capital accounting for construction in progress, depreciable capital assets, and Right-to-Use Assets governed by GASB 87 and GASB 96.
• Monitor cash balances, provide regular cash balance reports and projections to management.
• Prepare internal financial reports and perform financial analytics as requested; assist Institute departments with reporting capabilities and fiscal review.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
The related knowledge, skills and abilities for the position include the following:
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field.
• Demonstrated ability to accurately assemble, analyze and interpret financial statements and financial reports encompassing complex financial data.
• Ability to interpret and apply accounting and auditing principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
• Strong knowledge of and experience in the use of automated accounting/financial systems and Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize, manage and execute multiple priorities concurrently.
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Additional Considerations
• Certified Public Accountant licensure.
• Extensive governmental accounting knowledge and experience; understanding of various regulatory agency requirements as related to higher education operations and the required forms, reports and filings thereof.
