Job Duties
2025 GIS Developer/Analyst Internship - The Virginia Department of Forestry has an exciting opportunity for college students in good academic standing at two-year and four-year undergraduate level programs or for veterans transitioning to civilian roles.

VDOF was established in 1914 to prevent and suppress forest fires and reforest bare lands. Since our inception, we have grown and evolved to encompass other protection and management duties:
Performs moderate technical work creating web applications using Esri software.
Duties
• Create apps using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS and ad-hoc cartographic/spatial analysis;
• Develop and implements solutions to problems involving geographic data and products using Esri software;
• Utilize Experience Builder, ArcGIS Dashboard and ArcGIS StoryMaps to create and configure web applications as needed;
• Provide qualitative/quantitative analysis; create map products to support various programs and projects;
• Perform related tasks as required.
This is an internship position and candidates may be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university program with related Geographic Information Systems coursework
Experience in the following software is preferred: Microsoft Office (Word/Excel), ArcGIS Pro 3.4, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Dashboard, Experience Builder, Survey123, Story Maps, Field Maps; competency in Python and SQL database scripting, Model Builder, and remote sensing analysis
Our internships aim to raise awareness of professional opportunities among students of all backgrounds and promote practical experience in the field of Natural Resource Management.
NOTE: This is an hourly wage ($16.00/hr.) (Summer Intern) position that is approved for up -to 360 hours, the duration of the internship program from June 16, 2025-August 15, 2025.
This position will be located at our Charlottesville Headquarters. Typical hours of work will be 8:00-4:30 Monday through Friday. Teleworking options are not available.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of principles and concepts of Geographic Information System (GIS);
• General knowledge of computer software and hardware;
• Ability to use personal computer, office equipment, and related software;
• Ability to effectively communicate ideas verbally and in writing;
