The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia. The Richmond District has road and bridge toll facilities geographically located within it and is home to two Metropolitan Planning Organizations. With a $750 million construction, maintenance and operations program, the Richmond District is at the heart of the Commonwealth representing both urban and rural environments. Based in South Chesterfield, the Richmond District consists of 14 counties (Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan and Prince George), four cities (Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond) and 15 towns. The district is responsible for approximately 18,000 miles of road in Central Virginia making it VDOT’s largest roadway network for a District. Approximately 880 employees work within the Richmond District, which includes four Residency Offices and 27 Area Headquarters.
