About this Position

he Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Residential Advisor for 2nd Shift.

This is a 10-month, classified position with state benefits, including health insurance, retirement, life insurance and disability coverage.

This job will start with the 2025-2026 school year and is a 10-month classified position.

Job Duties


This position assists with after school programming and student activity supervision.
Responsibilities include:
● Provide a structured daily routine to ensure delivery of program services
● Plan educational, recreational and/or leisure time activities
● Provide personal care for students and assist with personal hygiene practices
● Assist students with individual school activities and programs of individual student interest
● Implement student Behavior Intervention Plans and adhere to behavior management policies and
procedures
● Provide accurate written reports/logs of activities and incidents with students
● Supervise students on scheduled bus routes to ensure safety and appropriate conduct
● Transport students to and from school and evening off-campus activities

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma of General Education Development Certificate (GED);
● Current CPR and First Aid certification or must be obtained in accordance with school policy
● Valid Driver's License with driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway and
passenger safety or ability to obtain following DMV guidelines
● Skill in behavior management or ability to complete behavior management training
● Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures
● Ability to communicate via spoken English (depending on operational need; required for positions
working with students with vision loss)
● Proficiency level in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Scale
specific to assignment or must be obtained within three years
● Ability to communicate effectively in both orally and written formats

Additional Considerations

Ability to interact with individuals in a patient, positive and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development.

Ability to carry out instructional, personal care and support tasks and to plan and implement activity programs for individuals with sensory impairment, intellectual disabilities or severe disabilities.

Ability to work with students with behavioral difficulties and acute medical needs is preferred.

Skill in behavior management or ability to complete behavior management training.

Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures.

Proficiency level of “Advanced” (deaf department) or “Intermediate” (blind department) in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Scale or ability to acquire the specified level within three years.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.

Physical requirements:

Ability to interact on a physical level with individuals and perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending and climbing.

Ability to supervise and assist with the transportation of individuals via buses or other vehicles to ensure safety and appropriate conduct.

Ability to monitor individuals during transportation and drive state vehicles in order to transport students to and from the school campus as needed.
