Job Duties
VDOT’s Culpeper District is seeking a Senior Survey Technician to perform technical surveys for a wide range of transportation projects in support of VDOT maintenance and construction programs. This position will secure data using a wide range of field survey equipment and to ensure the quality of data through routine control procedures. In addition, will ensure that all surveys are in compliance with VDOT policies and procedures and APELSCIDLA rules and regulations. This role will support the Location and Design Division in achieving its mission, goals, and objectives.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
Perform quality control reviews of work products, both in the field and office, to ensure products are accurate and depict the project controls and data to support the project. View plans or plats at the different developmental stages for compliance to standards.
Conduct a wide range of field survey activities for transportation projects from scoping to post-construction. Follow VDOT policies and procedures and APELSCIDLA rules and regulations governing survey activities. Use a variety of surveying equipment and tools to locate and record field data. Conduct courthouse research on plats.
Perform surveying and mapping functions in accordance with project scheduling and in support of VDOT programs. Perform tasks on one or more projects, adjusting priorities as needed. Coordinate the flow of information, both orally and in writing, to and from others, to contribute to project development.
Establish and apply procedures to manage the history, locations, access, and format of survey related project files. Complete work processes using multiple survey, MicroStation, and digital terrain modeling software, as well as other non-CADD applications. Ability to perform public records research and the ability to interpret and plot deeds.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with customers and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of field survey equipment.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include CADD.
• Knowledge of surveying principles and practices to include location, right of way and construction survey activities.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records.
• Skill in the use of surveying instruments and tools, including programmable calculators and electronic data collection equipment.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Additional Considerations
• Land Survey License, Land Surveyor in Training Certificate or Survey Apprenticeship Certification.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Engineering Techology or related field desired.
• Experience conducting surveys for transportation projects.
