Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an exciting opportunity to serve as a Supervisor in our Structures & Bridges section at our Manassas location within the NOVA District.

Supervise a work crew in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operational standards. Establish daily work goals, monitor performance, provide on-going coaching, and document and evaluate work accomplishments.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures and ability to manage individual and team performance successfully.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for bridge maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs applicable to highway and bridge maintenance work, equipment and tools.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to provide technical direction, guidance, and training to a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and manual laborers.
• Ability to complete reports and maintain records.
• Knowledge of structure and bridge construction and maintenance methods, procedures, practices and equipment.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, in water, in heavy traffic and other adverse conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
• Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
• Knowledge of basic inventory practices and procedures
• Skill in the use of various carpentry tools, concrete forming and finishing methods, and fabricating steel components and welding.

Licenses and certifications required for job & position:
• Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
• DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN)
• Flagger

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable skill in the use of various carpentry tools, concrete forming, finishing methods, fabricating steel components and welding.
• Knowledge of structure, bridge construction and maintenance methods, procedures, practices and equipment.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to lead, direct and train others.
• Ability to obtain Flagger, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certifications.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, operate and maintain light and medium equipment used for bridge maintenance and repair.
• Considerable knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs applicable to highway and bridge maintenance work, equipment and tools.
• Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Knowledge of basic inventory practices and procedures and ability to complete reports and maintain records.

Additional Considerations

• Valid Commercial Drivers license.
• Experience in the maintenance or construction of bridges and structures.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Construction, or related field desired.
• Experience in inventory management
• Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.

• Approved Safety Shoes are required. There is an opportunity for reimbursement.

• May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation.

• Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain, working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations.

• Ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture.

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
