About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Communications Technician in our Communications Division at the Division 7 Field Radio Shop in Fairfax, Virginia. The successful candidate will conduct installation, removal, and servicing of equipment located in remote fixed sites and various types of mobile subscriber configurations for each of the agencies participating in the Statewide Radio System; and respond, troubleshoot, and restore Statewide Communications services on a 24-hour basis for an Integrated Voice and Data Network for VSP and 21 other state agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

•Demonstrated knowledge of advanced electronic theory and practices applicable to fixed and mobile microprocessor controlled Land mobile Radio and Microwave Point to Point systems of trunked, digital, and analog architecture, wired Key Service Utility (KSU), Digital Service Unit (DSU), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and Primary Rate Interface (PRI) based telephone systems, vehicle based video capture systems, emergency power generator systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) remote site systems, PC laptops used for mobile data, and supporting environmental and physical plant equipment.
•Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications.
•The ability to install, repair, and maintain, equipment and/or software related to the above-mentioned systems.
•Ability to work alone or part of a team comprised of co-workers, other agency personnel, or the public.
•Ability to serve on a rotating 24/7 emergency call out schedule, and prepare, maintain entries into service record and asset management databases.
•Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
•Must live within a 90-minute drive of the radio shop where the employee is assigned.
•Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operators License or recognized equivalent within six months of employment required.
•Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
•Possession of a Registered Technician certification through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Program within six months of accepting employment and maintain Certification for duration of employment.
•High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Considerations

•Formal military or civilian trade school or equivalent work experience preferred.
