Job Duties

• Supervise and manage the daily operations and functions of the department as it relates to Accessibility Services.
• Communicate the policies and procedures of the department and the rights and responsibilities of the students when introducing students to the program.
• Train, educate, and provide legal support to administrators, faculty, and staff on the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and state and local requirements regarding accessibility students.
• Clearly articulate the rights and responsibilities of accessibility students as they relate to access at NSU, the rights and responsibilities of NSU as it relates to disability access.
• Experience and comfort with public speaking
• Ability to manage a caseload of students
• Ability to demonstrate professional competence in responding to and assessing accommodation requests
• Ability and willingness to work as part of an interdisciplinary team in a cooperative and respectful manner
• Ability to document in electronic database system
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity
• Strong organizational and administrative skills

Minimum Qualifications

Required Experience
• Working knowledge of reasonable accommodations for accessibility students in an educational environment
• Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, FERPA, HIPAA, and other federal and state disability policies and legislation
• Demonstrated ability to work with teaching faculty and administrative personnel to provide accommodations
• Working knowledge of Assistive Technology
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
• Demonstrated ability and skill to manage and supervise practicum/internship students
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate and interpret disability documentation supporting requests for accommodations
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance
• Demonstrated ability to assist with technical training or auxiliary aids for faculty and staff
• A minimum of two years of experience in higher education
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities

Additional Considerations

To remain in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 to include state and local requirements regarding students with disabilities. To provide support (counseling and advocacy) and services (classroom accommodations, test taking alternatives, encouragement, and assistance) to students with disabilities in an effort to assist Accessibility Students in their goal of securing a degree from Norfolk State University. Work with students, parents, faculty, high schools, and community agencies to achieve this goal.
