Job Duties

VDOT's Lynchburg District Amherst Sign Crew is looking for a highly skilled Operator Sign to drive improve and maintain infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation! As the successful candidate, you will Install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). This position is considered essential.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance.
  • Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.
  • Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
  • Skill in general carpentry.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Additional Considerations

  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety.
  • Inventory experience.
  • Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator.
  • Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair.
  • CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course.
  • Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the MUTCD or similar regulations.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
