VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has an exciting opportunity available in its Materials Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Senior Materials Engineer Technician vacancy. This position:
• Performs and inspects materials techniques, testing and equipment at projects. Trains and assists field staff on testing methods.
• Performs laboratory tests on materials samples collected from plans and project sites. Compute and document test results and compare them with plans and specifications.
• Compiles and maintains automated and written reports and project records for assigned program areas, in accordance with guidelines and policies.
• Maintain testing equipment inventory. Perform routine maintenance reports on testing equipment. Follow appropriate guidelines for equipment storage, use, and transportation.
• Operate Core Rig vehicle for samples and necessary maintenance
• Demonstrate knowledge of project activities and deliverables. Manage time to ensure project work is completed on time and efficiently. Inform supervisor of issues regarding getting project completion done on time.
• Communicate with VDOT staff as well as external staff to proactively resolve issues. Advise supervisor on critical developments and observations.
• Inspect materials production at plant. Perform statistical sampling in accordance with VDOT quality assurance program. Process data and prepare reports for distribution and review. Keep the supervisor updated on plant performance and quality control plans.

• Ability to work independently and in teams, including VDOT construction, contractor, and producer personnel
• Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and maintain data. Ability to prepare or review technical reports
• Knowledge of materials test methods and procedures. Skill in preparing samples and performing laboratory tests
• Knowledge of materials sampling and field-testing methods and procedures
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance concepts and practices
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications
• Knowledge of highway construction and maintenance materials
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
• Ability to interpret plans, drawings, manuals, VTM/ASTM/AASHTO test methods, and VDOT
specifications
• Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports
• Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to VDOT's program areas
• Skill in the use of computers and job-relevant software programs
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid driver's license
• Skill in the use of materials sampling and testing equipment
• Experience reflecting knowledge of highway construction, maintenance methods, materials and usage
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation
• Ability to work with and train others
• Experience reflecting knowledge of materials sampling and testing procedures
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Materials certifications vary by position. Ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment
Additional Considerations
• Current possession of required materials certifications
• A combination of training, experience, or education in civil engineering, or related field desired
• Ability to interpret plans, drawings, manuals, test methods and specifications
• Knowledge of materials quality control and quality assurance practices
• Prior experience in materials testing, construction, maintenance or a related field
• Experience working in teams with VDOT construction, contract or producer personnel

This position is classified as “designated” to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
