Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Part-Time Patrol Officer to provide for the oversight of public safety on the Petersburg Campus, and to provide and efficient and effective means of reducing crimes and safety hazards through education, patrol, investigations, recovery of property and fire prevention.

Job Duties Include:
Patrol and Rounds
• Patrols within statutory jurisdiction; properties, buildings, and parking lots by foot, vehicle, or as assigned to establish a visible presence to deter criminal activity and to detect incidents compromising safety and security
• Responds to calls for service in a timely manner
• Assist Local Law Enforcement with Investigations of vehicle crashes on state owned property consistent with Department policies
• Demonstrates the skill to analyze and solve problems. This refers to the gathering of information, anticipation of problems, weighing of consequences, soundness of decisions, and determining if enforcement action is required
• Provides crime prevention services to facility through frequent patrols and safety presentations
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Ensures that facilities and occupants are secure and safe by following Hospital and Departmental Policy and Procedure
• Takes appropriate observation and notification actions to support law enforcement authorities in the prevention and investigation of criminal law violations consistent with Department policies and Virginia State Code.
• Performs facility fire drills to maintain compliance with State Fire Marshal and Joint Commission regulations.
• Performs patrols to check doors and windows of buildings on campus.
• Checks out Department cell phone for work business.
• Properly raise, lower and store flags for CSH and HDMC

Dispatch
• Using a dispatched system, receive emergency and non – emergency calls for service, requesting police, fire protection and support service; determine the nature, location; priority, and dispatch the appropriate public safety officer or tradesman without delay.
• Maintain an up to date 24-hour report. Report should include date, officers on duty, assignments; and reflect the activities that occur on the shift.
• Conduct inspection of patrol vehicles at the beginning of each shift, ensuring there are no damages. Documenting findings on 24-hour report.
• Respond in a professional manner to various incidents and emergencies
• Issue keys out with proper paperwork and signatures.
• Maintain a positive and professional demeanor when interacting with others.
• Ensure documentation is completed accurately and concisely
• Answer Hospital Phone line when assigned. Remain professional when speaking and transferring calls.
• Have computer skills to log and type various logs and reports for the Department

Investigations and Documentation
• Responds to criminal investigations in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
• Investigates, observes, and reports suspected criminal activity to law enforcement authorities.
• Files required reports and forms within established deadlines, which are accurate, legible, and contain required information
• Effectively expresses ideas orally or in writing as required to perform the job.
• Testify in court when needed
• Be able to type and send reports.

Minimum Qualifications

- Valid Virginia Driver’s License
- Ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer.
- Previous Security experience, Law Enforcement or Military experience.

KSA's required to successfully perform the job:
Knowledge of unarmed security and the ability to compose clear and concise written reports, statements, and other communications; the ability to read and understand departmental policies, procedures, instructions, and regulations; the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner and be able to perform preventive operator’s maintenance; ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer. Perform effective searches of property; interpersonal skills for dealing with sensitive, emotional or potentially controversial interpersonal situations. Exhibit the ability to operate a personal computer and perform data entry; and the ability to work evening shift 2p-10p after training in order to meet campus and/or departmental needs.

Additional Considerations

- Previous experience working in a Mental Health setting preferred
- Must be available to work weekends

These positions are hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
