Job Duties
This position is an hourly/wage position. Wage employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week on average over the course of a year and are limited to 1,500 hours within a 12-month period. No State benefits are provided.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking a Custodian (Wage) to provide basic housekeeping and cleaning services. Responsible for the care and handling of housekeeping supplies and equipment.
Core responsibilities for job & position:
Report unsafe or unusual housekeeping situations or facilities issues to supervisor.
Properly handle cleaning products and supplies. Restock paper products and supplies in assigned areas. Handle and mix cleaning solutions/chemicals in proper proportion according to guidelines. Inform supervisor when stock levels are running low.
Perform cleaning activities to include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning, and collecting and removing trash and debris. Work areas include offices, rest rooms, meeting rooms, public areas, etc.
Responsible for the care and proper handling of assigned keys.
Perform duties, tasks, activities and/or projects as assigned.
Required skills for job & position:

• Knowledge of cleaning procedures, products, and chemicals.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to use time wisely.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods.
• Ability to operate manual and electric cleaning equipment.
• Ability to follow safety precautions.
• Ability to safely mix chemicals and solutions according to guidelines.
• Ability to physically perform manual cleaning duties.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
• Ability to lift/move furniture such as chairs/tables for cleaning.
Additional Considerations
• Prior housekeeping or cleaning work experience.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Housekeeping or related field desired.

Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, references, and work history will be required prior to employment. Valid driver’s license required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
