Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s Office of the University Counsel & Office of the Attorney General seeks applicants for the position of Legal Assistant. The Office provides effective and high quality legal services, in keeping with the laws and policies of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the Legal Assistant, and under the direct supervision of the University Counsel, incumbent would be required to:
1. Research legal issues using legal research tools, including Lexis and industry standard resources.
2. Provide support, input, and legal analysis on complex legal procedures; draft pleadings, affidavits and legal memorandum.
3. Review policies, contracts, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and investigate and support areas requiring legal input and direction.
4. Provide interpretation and review of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and response, Procurement Act Compliance oversight, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
5. Coordinates and maintains oversight of the legal services provided to the University community.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Considerable knowledge of complex legal standards including interpreting, drafting, reviewing, and editing legal documents.
2. Considerable knowledge of practices related to standardized legal actions including discovery, subpoena duces tecum, trial and hearing preparation, interrogatories, trial and pretrial orders, and legal briefs.
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and convey matters to large diverse audiences (students/staff/faculty)
4. Skilled in the use of computerized applications to include Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Word, and Access.
5. Ability to accurately take copious notes and properly edit, review and publish for professional dissemination to senior and executive staff and faculty.
6. Demonstrated ability to monitor projects and meet and prioritize competing deadlines.
7. Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities, preferred. Significant experience in a legal environment is desired.
Additional Considerations
1. Master’s degree preferred.
2. Previous experience working as a Legal Assistant or similar discipline, directly supporting attorney(s).
