Job Duties

The Alexandria Health Department has five exciting Public Health Nurse (PHN) positions to serve the residents of the City of Alexandria. Most of the population served is uninsured, under-insured, or Medicaid eligible, and have multiple barriers in accessing basic health services. All five positions may function in an expanded role and provide clinical care services in various areas including Immunization, Sexual Reproductive Health (Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Infections), Tuberculosis, Newcomer (Refugees) Health, outreach and outbreak responses.

We are seeking five highly motivated Public Health Nurses, three PHN positions available focus on providing case management services for maternal and child health in home, clinic, and community settings. The role aims to ensure proper clinical service linkage during pregnancy and infancy to prevent poor birth outcomes. These nurses will contribute to the Baby Care program. Another PHN position focuses on providing services related to sexual reproductive health, including screening, testing, investigations, and patient referrals. This expanded practice role will also involve clinical care in other health department areas. The final PHN position focuses on delivering nursing care related to HIV prevention (PrEP), working with the Epidemiology and Population Health divisions for outbreak responses and outreach. This nurse will also provide clinical care in other health department areas.

Services are delivered Monday to Friday in person in the community and clinics with adjusted schedules for limited early evenings and occasional weekends. These positions require an ability to provide own transportation to home or community activities and maintain efficiency expectations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

Additional Considerations

• Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
• BSN preferred
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion.
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
