Job Duties
Monitor the contracted pharmacy services. Provide related consultation. Utilize technical skills and professional judgement to provide medications to inmate patients. Assist the Virginia Department of Corrections related to pharmacy issues. To understand and educate the field on all electronic healthcare systems as it relates to pharmacy services. To look for and facilitate cost savings throughout the system. The pharmacist is responsible for participating in quality assurance activities regarding medications. This includes policy and medication usage and/or audits and the suggestion, authoring, or performance of Drug Utilization Evaluation studies needed to maintain quality patient care and cost-effective medication management. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
Minimum Qualifications
Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college/university recognized by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
Possess a current and unrestricted Virginia Pharmacy license issued by the Department of Health Professions (must be a Registered Pharmacist (RPH) in VA) at the time of application.
Ability to monitor and provide guidance for the clinical, administrative, and operational aspects of a specialized pharmacy operation.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Must have knowledge of the standards and guidelines required by the agency and the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, Pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, patient monitoring techniques, drug information retrieval, drug distribution systems, methods of sterile compounding, quality control techniques, legal limitations on procurement, storage distribution, sale of drugs, and federal and state laws applicable to the practice or pharmacy.
Must have strong understanding of predominant diseases in the correctional population (HEP C, HIV, Psych, etc.).
Must have extensive understanding of collaborative practices and benefits.
Additional Considerations
Ability to be proactive in their job duties and strive for quality improvement.
Experience in correctional healthcare.
Experience in direct patient care and collaborative practice agreements
