Job Duties
This individual will investigate suspected violations of the Virginia Consumer Protection Act and other state and federal consumer protection laws. The investigator will handle consumer complaints that allege violations of law and will facilitate the resolution of consumer complaints as may be appropriate. Where a pattern or practice of consumer protection violations is suspected or found, the investigator will work with Consumer Protection Section attorneys to develop and pursue a possible enforcement action. The investigator will conduct consumer and witness interviews, draft interview summaries, and prepare investigative reports. When appropriate, the investigator will perform field investigations, including in matters involving the sale of substances containing tetrahydrocannabinol, unlawful price gouging, and towing law violations. Routine interaction with state/federal officials, businesses, and the general consuming public is required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Qualified candidates should have knowledge and experience in consumer protection laws, conducting interviews and investigations, and facilitating the resolution of consumer complaints.
- Candidates also should have well-developed oral and written communication skills; a proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment; and the skills to interact effectively with other state/federal agencies and the general public.
- Proficiency using personal computers is required, including a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases.
Additional Considerations
Preferred candidates will possess a B.A. or B.S. college degree in criminal justice, public administration, political science, government, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of experience, training, and education in law enforcement, regulatory enforcement, or investigations.
