The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees, making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.

The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of: Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles. Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.

The Salem District is seeking a Supervisor to oversee a crew for the repair, maintenance and replacement of bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures and equipment operational standards. Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:

Assist the Superintendent in developing and planning work schedules and obtaining needed tools, equipment, and materials to complete assigned work. Assign work to crew and monitor performance to ensure work is performed safely, on time and within budget. Monitor contractor performance. Respond to complaints and update asset management system.

Assist with review and determination of repair needs. Complete work reports and other administrative tasks as needed. Perform the full range of supervisory duties, including training and development, coaching, and performance management.

Secure materials, equipment, and services as required to perform assigned tasks and emergency repairs.

Receive, issue, and review stock items for daily work assignments. Perform first counts, inventory reviews, and complete all required stock related forms.

May operate equipment, perform preventative maintenance on equipment and tools and perform manual labor. This position is designated as essential for emergency response.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of structure and bridge construction and maintenance methods,procedures, practices and equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs applicableto highway and bridge maintenance work, equipment and tools.
• Knowledge of basic inventory practices and procedures and ability to complete reports and maintain records.
• Ability to lead, direct and train others.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate and maintain light and medium equipment used for bridge maintenance and repair.
• Considerable skill in use of various carpentry tools, concrete forming and finishing methods and fabricating steel components and welding.
• Skill in use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to obtain flagger and DCR Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector certifications.
• Valid CDL and DOT medical card or ability to obtain within 11 months of employment.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in structure and bridge maintenance, repair and replacement.
• Experience in carpentry, concrete placement and finishing and steel componentfabrication.
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
• Experience leading, supervising and training others.
• Experience in inventory management.
• Valid CDL and DOT medical card.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
