Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services seeks a dynamic, results-oriented executive to serve as Director of the Division of Commodity Services. This position serves on the agency’s Strategic Management Team and provides leadership and management of the agency’s commodity grading programs, which include Fruit and Vegetable, Grain, Livestock, Peanut, and Poultry and Egg. These programs are responsible for delivering uniform and unbiased grading and inspection services that enhance the profitability of Virginia agriculture in support of the Agency mission and strategic plan. Additionally, this position oversees the division’s financial, administrative and human resource operations. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable experience in managing programs that deliver uniform and unbiased product grading and inspection services; managing federal and state cooperative agreements; ability to plan, set objectives and goals to achieve results; ability to manage people and resources effectively; analytical ability and decision making skills; skilled in managing supervisory personnel across a broad geographic area to develop teamwork and cooperation in the work unit; ability to work with a broad constituency representing industry, citizens and government; good public relations skills; knowledge and experience in administrative and budget procedures and management; knowledge of state government and the legislative process; ability to interpret grading standards, policies, procedures, guidelines and requirements; and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge and experience in customer service principles and quality improvement processes. Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in the usage of personal computers. Proven interpersonal skills. Extensive knowledge of one or more of the technical areas managed. H.S.D or equivalent required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of agriculture, business administration, science or related field. Advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in these areas are desirable. Demonstrated successful management experience in government or related work environment, developing teamwork and customer service orientation of programs and processes.
