Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is currently hiring a Community Violence Intervention Specialist. This role will develop, implement, and monitor gang and violence intervention program planning for reduced recidivism and improved intervention services in support of program objectives.

Please note this position will be responsible for working at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center (Chesterfield, VA) 2-3 days a week and the Chesapeake Interventions Office (Chesapeake, VA), along with travel to detention centers and alternative placements on the remaining days.  This position will work mid-shift nights 11am-8pm, Mondays-Fridays, holidays, and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the juvenile justice system; case management guidelines, and juvenile justice program development.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience directly supervising youth supervision status, at-risk, and delinquent, extensive history working with service providers, alternate placements, and detention center staff.
  • Considerable background in gang intervention or gun violence programming required.
  • Ability to develop and plan policies, standards, regulations, legislation, goals, and strategies; to interpret data, policies and procedures and make recommendations related to management and operational issues and resource deployment.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently gather and interpret data, draw conclusions, and implement solutions; write grants; clearly present information in written and verbal formats; manage multiple tasks and projects; work independently.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft and other computer software including spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and presentation packages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from various levels of agency operations.

Additional Considerations

  • Training and/or experience in research, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.
