Job Duties
The Division of Shellfish Safety and Waterborne Hazards within the Office of Environmental Health Services is seeking a Laboratory Specialist Sr. to work in the Kilmarnock Field Office. This position is critical to VDH meeting the standards set for by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program Model Ordinance (NSSP) for the bacterial examination of growing area seawater and shellfish meats. This position analyzes and reports results of samples submitted for bacteriological examination, which is the basis for the Shellfish Growing Area Classification Program to determine open and closed areas to shellfish harvest to protect public health.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to accurately analyze and report results of samples submitted for
bacteriological examination
• Must be able to read and comprehend instructions for standard laboratory
procedures
• Experience in performing microbiological, chemical and microscopic
analyses
• Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and basic quality assurance
principles
Additional Considerations
• Training/Education in microbiology/biology is preferred
• Previous microbiological laboratory experience preferred
• Occasional overnight travel may be required
