Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a qualified individual to work part-time assisting examiners in the Firearms and Toolmarks Section of the Eastern Laboratory in Norfolk, VA. Work hours will be no more than 29 hours per week within the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The successful candidate will assist examiners with administrative and laboratory support. Primary duties may include: preservation and transfer of evidentiary crime scene materials, particularly dealing with various aspects of firearms and toolmarks evidence. Also, assisting with laboratory support functions such as: perform quality control of reagents and equipment, perform preventive maintenance on equipment, prepare reagents, input case data into database, and inventory/order of supplies related to firearms analysis.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the theory and application of natural science and general mathematics as they relate to the storage and preservation of crime scene evidence
  •  Ability to maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, follow written protocols and oral instructions, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and independently perform routine duties
  • Proficiency in administrative type duties:
    • Responding to and directing business related telephone calls to the appropriate person
    • Setting up and maintaining files
    • Using Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
  • Valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation

Additional Considerations

  • Familiarity with a scientific laboratory environment using basic laboratory equipment, techniques, and laboratory safety procedures
  • Work experience with chain of custody in a laboratory environment
  • Work experience in a scientific laboratory environment operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation
  • Work experience in a scientific laboratory environment preparing solutions and reagents
  • Experience using computers in a laboratory environment
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of firearms
