Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia (OES) is seeking an individual to serve as a Wellness Administrative Assistant to be responsible for working with Virginia’s Lawyers Wellness Initiative (VLWI), Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (VJLAP) and other entities to promote professional well-being initiatives directed to judges, lawyers, law students, and their families. The Wellness Administrative Assistant will assist with communications for the Wellness Advisory Committee, a board of volunteer members appointed by the Supreme Court. The Wellness Assistant will be part of the OES Department of Educational Services and will report to the Director of Educational Services and the Wellness Coordinator. This is a part-time position, not to exceed 24 hours per week. This position includes an option to work remotely on an agreed upon schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Educational Services and the Wellness Coordinator, communicate with private entities, state agencies, and others to develop and promote educational content and programs for judges, law students, and legal professionals regarding physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational, social, and spiritual well-being, with an emphasis on mental health and substance use issues.
  • Research topics and implement communication and outreach strategies based on the most current research and data on well-being. Outreach and education may include creation of presentation slides, newsletters, fliers, brochures, and other promotional materials.
  • Provide general clerical and administrative support to the Wellness Coordinator.
  • Assist with drafting reports for Continuing Legal Education credit, editorials, and Advisory Committee.
  • Provide support for the Wellness Advisory Committee and preparation for meetings.
  • Provide support for the Mentor Advisory Committee, including assisting with drafting of letters, and the assignment of judicial mentors for newly appointed judges in the Commonwealth.
  • Provide support for the Peer-to-Peer Coaching Program regarding program development, education, and outreach.
  • Provide support for the Law Student Well-Being Workgroup, made up of associate deans of students from all eight of Virginia’s law schools, VJLAP, and the Virginia Law Foundation, to identify trends in law student well-being and develop educational programming to address their occupational risks.
  • Provide support for Magistrate Wellness Committee, and any other general wellness work groups.
  • Occasional travel within Virginia is required for Judicial Conferences and other speaking engagements.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful applicant will have excellent communication, organizational, technological, and administrative skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate attention to detail and strong research and writing skills, including the ability to draft and prepare correspondence, written materials for CLE programs, and other external communications. Problem-solving skills, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential. As this position will interact with diverse populations across Virginia’s legal community, commitment to inclusion, fairness, equal justice, and open-minded, non-judgmental awareness are important attributes of a successful candidate.

Additional Considerations

The most competitive applicant will be proficient in office technology systems including the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Canva, and WebEx.
