The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.
The Division of Natural Heritage is accepting applications for the Northern Region Assistant Steward position.
The Northern Region (NR) Assistant Steward will assist with the management of Natural Area Preserves (NAP) in the Northern Region, with a focus on Crow’s Nest NAP. This position will also monitor public use and provide site presence at Crow’s Nest during periods of high visitor use. The successful candidate will be based in Stafford County. The work schedule is flexible and will include weekend hours. This position will offer learning and professional training opportunities as available and appropriate.
Duties include invasive species management, biological resource monitoring, trail maintenance, posting preserve boundaries, cleaning & maintaining equipment and maintenance yard, NAP trash removal, and other duties as assigned. This position must safely operate vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and trailers, tractors, UTVs, chainsaws, herbicide sprayers, hand tools, power tools, and prescribed fire equipment. Additionally, this position will provide on-site presence, manage visitation, and provide interpretation about natural resources and preserve rules at Crow’s Nest NAP, thus helping to ensure a balance between resource protection and public use.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Basic knowledge of natural resource management, forestry, ecology, or related science.
2. Basic knowledge of Windows-based computer operation and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
3. Demonstrated experience navigating both on and off trails with a compass and/ or GPS.
4. Proficient data organization skills to include documenting, updating, and maintaining records; logging data; and keeping inventory of supplies on-hand and/or needed.
5. Experience safely using a variety of hand and/ or power tools.
6. Ability to follow directions, work as part of a team and work independently.
7. Ability to effectively and positively communicate with the public
Additional Considerations
1. Experience with safe operation of vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and trailers, tractors, UTVs, chainsaws, pesticide sprayers, and prescribed fire equipment preferred.
2. Experience using GIS programs and/or mobile applications.
3. CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification.
4. DCR chainsaw sawyer apprentice certification (or equivalent) or ability to obtain certification.
