Job Duties
• Identify legal needs of clients and options for meeting them.
• Provide leadership and guidance to Higher Education Section lawyers to coordinate consistent advice to similarly situated clients.
• Assist Higher Education Section lawyers in identifying and managing institutional legal risks.
• Establish relationships with clients to foster well-informed decision-making.
• Advise supervisory boards on legal issues related to executive employment and compensation.
• Coordinate litigation strategy and evaluate and approve proposed settlements.
• Work with Deputy to develop and implement section goals.
• Facilitate appointment and management of outside counsel.
• Participate in OAG bill review process.
• Contribute to OAG opinions process.
• Share expertise and coordinate on legal and management issues with attorneys in the Higher Education Section and throughout the OAG.
• Supervise and mentor attorneys and support staff.
• Administer OAG policies and protocols as applicable.
• Recruit, interview and recommend hiring of Higher Education Section attorneys as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
- High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required.
- Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.
Additional Considerations
Working knowledge of legal subjects fundamental to higher education and / or state government is preferred.
