Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is looking for looking for a skilled, hands-on technician who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to join our Facilities Department as a part-time Facilities Maintenance Technician.


In this vital role, you’ll help ensure the Science Museum’s campus stays safe, functional, and welcoming for all guests. You’ll be responsible for general maintenance and repairs across a variety of building systems—including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, access control, and carpentry. From basic troubleshooting to preventive maintenance, no two days are the same. You’ll also respond to operational or safety concerns and collaborate with other departments to support Museum events and programs.

Please note that this is a part-time position and hours will vary each week based on operations but no more than up to 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided. Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.virginia.gov

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of general trades and ability to assist with performing, repairing and maintaining electrical, HVAC, plumbing, access control and carpentry duties with minimal assistance and guidance. Demonstrated experience with Building Automated System (BAS), ability to use all tools relative to maintenance trades, to read, write, understand, and communicate instructions. Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE). Ability to balance preventive maintenance schedules and urgent service needs. Ability to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing facility maintenance requirements, and other duties assigned. Ability to lift0 and move heavy objects; frequent standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching required. Ability
to work alternating weekend and holidays.

Additional Considerations

Electrical or other related trades certificate/license is a plus.
