Job Duties
The Deputy Clerk (Grade 9) is assigned operational responsibilities in a high volume, fast paced office with frequent deadlines. This position works under the direction of the Clerk of Court, and performs a wide variety of clerical, courtroom and administrative support duties for the Court by following established policies and procedures based upon Virginia statues, rules and local ordinances.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Duties include, but not limited to, preparing detailed court documents in accordance with established guidelines, automated case management system data entry, scheduling matters for court, preparing correspondence and legal documents, daily docket preparation, and attending court sessions. Additional responsibilities include answering phones, assisting customers at the front counter, assessing fines and costs and receipting payments. Applicants must possess the ability to professionally interact with diverse customers and provide excellent customer service. The ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, assume additional responsibilities as assigned by management, and attention to detail are necessary in this position.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. Most competitive applicants will have considerable court, business, office related and/or financial experience. Applicants must have the ability to explain procedures in a clear and easy to understand manner in person, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and have an advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software. Applicants should possess strong initiative and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision, independently and within a team in a fast-paced setting. Applicants should be highly organized. Discretion and integrity, while working with highly sensitive and confidential matters, is crucial.
Additional Considerations
Physical Requirements - Lift/carry 10+ pounds; bending/stretching to retrieve files, going up and down stairs, and sitting or standing for long periods of time.
