Job Duties

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a Strategy & Digital Communications Supervisor (SDCS), to join their award-winning team. The SDCS develops strategies to communicate essential VRS information and policies, to various stakeholder groups in support of agency initiatives, legislative mandates, and public relations. The position interacts with agency leadership and provides digital communications expertise and guidance to other agency departments. The SDCS serves as editor of a monthly digital newsletter targeting VRS-participating employers, manages the agency's social media presence, and also produces video stories to promote and support agency initiatives. The incumbent will also supervise full-time employees, within the Strategic & Digital Communications department.

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Analyzes complex topics, such as statutory requirements, policies and procedure directives, and translates into clear written and visual content for VRS audiences.
• Develops communication strategies and approaches with supporting tactics for web, email and social media platforms; writes, edits and proofreads content, following Associated Press (AP) Style, as well as agency style and standards.
• Produces content, sets measurement goals, tracks outcomes and interprets analytics.
• Edits monthly digital newsletter and online news site for VRS-participating employers.
• Demonstrates visual design acuity required to create short-form videos and graphics.
• Operates video-production and editing software, screen recorder software, cameras and microphones.
• Utilizes Adobe Creative Suite adeptly to produce digital and print content.
• Works proficiently in MS Office 365, including SharePoint Online.
• Supervises full-time department employees, who supports the overall digital communications outreach effort.
• Facilitates review and approval of content through subject matter experts and executives.
• Develops production schedules and coordinates with vendors and contractors.
• Demonstrates advanced knowledge of public relations and marketing communications best practices.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least five years of demonstrated digital communication experience that includes video production, photography, email campaigns and social media community management, underpinned by excellent writing and editing abilities.
• Proficient with MS Office, databases, desktop publishing technology, email software, and analytical tools.
• Must have a Virginia License, in good standing, and ability to travel to in-state locations.

Additional Considerations

• Knowledge of digital trends in public and private retirement systems, and industry pension, benefit and investment journals, preferred.
• Previous experience using SharePoint, preferred.
• Three or more years of supervisory experience, preferred.
• Experience with social media platforms, preferred.

Currently, this position has a hybrid work schedule - requiring work in the office two days per week, and work remotely three days per week. The selected candidate must be able to work in the office any day of the week as required by the manager. *Beginning January 2026 the hybrid schedule will require work in the office three days per week (T, W, TH), and work remotely two days per week (M, F).

*Periodic in-state travel is required, for this position*
