Job Duties

Following a direct protocol, policy or procedure provide technical support to professional medical and nursing staff. Duties consist of the following routine clinical tasks: collection of laboratory specimens, performing adult venipuncture and adult and pediatric capillary sticks, and performing clinical laboratory tests to include hemoglobin, hematocrit, glucose, urine pregnancy, fecal occult blood, sedimentation rate and urine dipsticks. Collect sputum samples. Assesses a client for changes in condition based on an established protocol approved by VDH. Sterilizes instruments, inventories and orders supplies, maintains logs, files and records, collects clinical data and compiles statistics. Works under the supervision of a licensed provider. Evidence of specific training in performing specialized duties and functions based on area of assignment is required.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

This is a restricted position, which is funded through a federal grant. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience performing health screening tests and procedures, including venipuncture. Phlebotomy experience and documentation of phlebotomy
• Knowledge of basic clinical and laboratory procedures and basic medical terminology
• Ability to work with patients of all ages and ethnicities and to work with a team; excellent customer service and communication skills; ability to problem solve, follow directions, set priorities; organize time to accomplish work; ability to provide patient referrals based on clinician orders; complete patient labs as needed and perform clerical activities including greeting patients, scheduling appointments, filing documents and using computers
• Familiar with specimen collection and processing
• Required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to VDH's driver safety policies

Additional Considerations

• Experience in public or health care setting and cleaning and sterilization of surgical equipment
• Office support experience in a medical setting and bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish, Arabic or Nepali
• Certified as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician
