Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Taxation’s Office of Compliance is seeking an Interstate Audit Manager to manage and direct the interstate tax audit program. This team conducts complex audits of large entities to ensure compliance with state taxes including, but not limited to, Retail Sales & Use, Corporate Income, Litter, and Withholding. The individual in this role will apply leadership techniques through training, coaching, and assisting staff members with development of the overall program. In this role, you will be a critical part of reducing the tax gap for the Commonwealth of Virginia in a manner consistent with the agency’s mission, values, and culture. 


As the Interstate Audit Manager, you will…

Manages a large team of Senior Auditors and Auditors who conduct complex tax audits of businesses located throughout the United States

Supervises auditors who conduct audits to ensure compliance with state tax laws and ensures proper assessment of tax liabilities of individuals and businesses in a fair and equitable manner

Provide quality customer service to the citizens of Virginia

Plan and direct multiple audits concurrently

Provide leadership as well as professional and technical guidance to staff

Provide recommendations to improve processes and operational efficiency

Periodic travel for in-person meetings with personnel, staff, and taxpayers/taxpayer representatives

Meet with staff members in-person at least two times per evaluation year



This position will be home-based/remote and can work from anywhere in the continental United States

Only current Virginia Tax employees will be considered for this role.

The anticipated hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of state sales & use, corporate income, and withholding tax laws, rules, regulations and policies and knowledge of federal tax laws and regulations

Considerable knowledge of effective principles and practices of management and supervision; including working knowledge of performance management techniques and practices for managing staff

Working knowledge and experience of accounting and audit principles and practices

Demonstrated ability to communicate concise and comprehensive information verbally and in writing, to customers, representatives, and staff

Considerable management or supervisory work experience preferably in an audit environment with home-based employees

 

 

Additional Considerations

Advanced knowledge and/or experience in business, finance, statistics, auditing, accounting, taxes and other relevant areas or work and study
