About the Agency:
The Virginia Department of Military Affairs State Team provides professional and responsive state support functions to the Adjutant General of Virginia, the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia Air Guard, and the Virginia Defense Force in order to ensure their ability to support and defend the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Purpose of Position:
The position serves as subject matter expert in a historic preservation field (archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation or history), providing support to the Agency’s Cultural Resources Program, and meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards (Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61) in an appropriate discipline. The position manages the VaARNG archaeology collection at all Agency installations and Cultural Resources Program documents, to support Agency responsibilities for compliance with state and federal laws governing cultural resources on all administered lands and facilities, and assists in successful implementation of NGVA-FMO-ENV objectives in an efficient, responsible, and professional manner. The position will enhance the Agency’s ability to manage military training lands in a sustainable manner.
This position is limited to one (1) day of telework per week, and is subject to change based on the agency head and Governor of Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in architectural historical, historical, and/or archaeological research and field work, and management of collections and records;
Knowledge of state and federal standards and other professional best practices pertaining to historic preservation, and regarding general collections care and management and conservation;
Working knowledge of preservation laws and regulations, and of architectural history, history, and/or prehistoric and/or historic archaeology of Virginia and/or the Mid-Atlantic region;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing: including preparation of technical reports, documentation materials, and presentations, and preparation of educational materials for diverse audiences, etc.;
Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and work well with VaARNG Agency staff representing all areas, with other state and federal agency staff, Agency contractors, volunteers, interns, and members of the public; and to supervise interns;
Experience conducting research in various topics related to cultural and military history;
Ability to develop and utilize computer applications in collections management and research;
Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision and guidance;
Training in historical and/or archaeological research, and collections care;
Qualifications consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards required;
Progressively professional experience in related program areas (architectural historical and/or archaeological field work, research, and findings analysis and reporting; and collections management), and progressively responsible experience in applying technical expertise to curatorial practices, collections interpretation, and historical research;
General historic preservation concepts and programs, and the ability to relate cultural resource management to the Agency’s mission;
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required.
Additional Considerations
Working knowledge of GIS preferred.
