Job Duties

The Training Supervisor for the Reentry, Programs, and Treatment Services Unit at the Virginia Department of Corrections’ Academy of Staff Development is responsible for leading the design, coordination, and delivery of specialized and mandated training for institutional and community-based treatment providers. This position supervises a team of training professionals, ensuring high-quality instruction aligned with evidence-based practices, adult learning principles, and departmental standards. The Training Supervisor collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to assess training needs, develop curricula, and support strategic initiatives that enhance reentry and treatment outcomes. Strong leadership, communication, and facilitation skills—both in-person and virtual—are essential, along with a solid understanding of correctional practices and treatment models.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have experience working in a correctional setting, preferably with the Virginia Department of Corrections, and a solid understanding of reentry, programs, and treatment services. Strong leadership and supervisory skills are essential, along with experience developing and delivering training for adult learners. Candidates should be familiar with evidence-based practices, ACA and DCJS standards, and possess excellent communication and facilitation skills—both in-person and virtually. Proficiency with computers and instructional technology is required.

Additional Considerations

Ideal candidates will hold a DCJS General Instructor Certification and have experience leading training initiatives within a correctional or criminal justice environment. A background in curriculum development, strategic planning, and cross-functional collaboration is highly desirable. Familiarity with adult learning theory, instructional design, and virtual training platforms. Experience supporting reentry, treatment, or transitional services programs, along with demonstrated success in managing complex projects and teams, will strengthen a candidate’s competitiveness.
