Job Duties
The Department of the Treasury is an innovative, customer-driven, results-oriented state agency providing financial management services for the Commonwealth. We offer challenging and interesting work and a friendly and positive environment.
Awareness of Virginia’s Unclaimed Property program has resulted in an increasing number of inquiries from the public. The Claims Unit receives inquiries via telephone, e-mail, U.S. mail, website uploads, and walk-in customers.
It will be the responsibility of the selected candidate to provide reliable, responsive service to customers, ensuring prompt, accurate payment of accounts to owners and heirs of Unclaimed Property.
The incumbent will be required to work with a significant degree of independence, to apply knowledge of administrative and program requirements and serve as a resource regarding the Unclaimed Property program, interpreting and applying policy, providing updates, and directing callers to other resources when appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
• Previous experience handling and understanding legal documents and financial instruments (i.e. checks, bank statements, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, life insurance policies, etc.)
• Working knowledge of financial/accounting principles and general business practices
• Excellent math, written and verbal communication skills
• Extensive experience providing excellent customer service to the public via telephone and e-mail
• Analytical and decision-making ability
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and Outlook)
• Previous experience with an electronic document management system and a paperless work environment
• Demonstrated ability to quickly enter, update, and obtain information via online computer applications or systems with minimal errors
• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
• Time management and organizational skills
• Demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time
• Track record of good attendance and punctuality
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs., sit for prolonged periods of time, read information off paper and computer monitors, lift and talk on the desk phone
Additional Considerations
• Coursework in business, finance or equivalent applicable training or experience
• General knowledge of applicable state and federal laws regarding taxes, wills, estates, and corporate matters is desirable
• Fluent in speaking Spanish
