Job Duties

Are you a strategic leader passionate about improving health care quality and protecting patients across the Commonwealth? The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is seeking a strategic, experienced, and mission-driven leader to serve as the Acute Care Division Director within the Office of Licensure & Certification (OLC). This position plays a vital role in protecting the health, safety, and rights of patients by overseeing the licensing, inspection, and regulation of acute care facilities across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Division Director will provide leadership and guidance for regulatory programs focused on hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, home care organizations, hospice, and other acute care providers. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence, and collaborating with stakeholders to advance healthcare quality and safety in Virginia’s acute care system.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic direction and executive leadership for the Acute Care Division.
• Oversee the licensing, inspection, and regulation of acute care facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Supervise and support a team of managers, surveyors, and administrative staff; promote a culture of transparency, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with VDH leadership, federal partners, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders to improve healthcare delivery and protect patients.
• Contribute to policy development, regulatory review, and process improvement initiatives.
• Respond to legislative inquiries, prepare reports, and represent the division in public forums as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Broad knowledge of national, regional and state health care issues
Specific knowledge of and experience in federal and state laws and regulations
Experience managing large staffs, remotely and on-site; experience developing, monitoring, and managing budgets
Knowledge of state and federal budgeting processes and procedures
Must be able to effectively write and deliver guidance to staff and constituents on applicable legislation/regulations, personal communications and technical reports
Must effectively communicate orally and interpersonally before groups; experience providing direction and management to staff; interpreting regulations and policies and applying them independently
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency
Experience building cohesive and cross functional teams; and effecting change through others in a collaborative & supportive fashion.

Additional Considerations

Experience in Public Administration, Medical Sciences, etc.
