Job Duties
The Science Museum is currently seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to deliver smooth, on-time payroll experiences to our agency.
In this dynamic role, you will take ownership of accurate and timely data entry related to payroll, benefits, and employee transactions within our HR system. As a key member of the Human Resources team, you will serve as the primary liaison between the Science Museum and the Payroll Services Bureau (PSB), managing the resolution of timekeeping, payroll, and benefits issues while ensuring compliance with all standards and deadlines. You will also lead onboarding activities, helping new hires transition smoothly and confidently into their roles.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess working knowledge of payroll systems, applicable state, federal, and local laws and regulations, as well as principles and practices related to payroll recordkeeping. Familiarity with basic benefits and leave reporting procedures, standard office practices, and the use of common office equipment is essential. Candidate must demonstrate the ability to meet strict deadlines and effectively manage the stress associated with confidential employee communications regarding payroll matters. Strong attention to detail and data entry accuracy are critical, along with the ability to independently research and resolve issues using analytical and mathematical methods. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as a strong commitment to providing high-quality customer service, are required.
The candidate should also have directly related experience in maintaining and reconciling payroll and financial records, with a solid understanding of timekeeping practices and personnel policies and procedures related to leave and attendance.
Additional Considerations
Cardinal Human Capital Management (HCM) or similar automated time and leave management system is a plus. Some knowledge and experience of Virginia Workers’ Compensation, Family and Medical Leave, and Virginia Sickness and Disability programs is a plus.
