Job Duties
As part of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you will play a crucial role in promoting the economic vitality of Virginia by helping qualified individuals start businesses and pursue their chosen fields. DPOR is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state laws and regulations.
This position is responsible for modeling an excellent customer service philosophy. Responds to inquiries, written, oral, and in person, from licensees, education providers, applicants, and the general public regarding the Virginia Board for Contractors. Receives, reviews, and responds to applications and requests for licensure and education provider approval. Determines eligibility of applications and evaluates applications for completeness and strict compliance with statutes, Board regulations, and policies. Issues licenses to qualified applicants, notifies applicants of application deficiencies, roster deficiencies, and advises what steps should be taken to resolve deficiencies. Creates, maintains, and updates an accurate filing system for all applicants and education providers.

TELEWORK OPTIONS: Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 90 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to independently determine if applicant qualifications for licensure satisfy the requirements of regulation, policy, and statute;
ability to work as part of a team with all staff and the general public under challenging circumstances and short deadlines with little supervision;
ability to understand and apply regulations and processing procedures, and keep accurate records;
ability to operate data entry/word processing equipment to keep accurate records and prepare grammatically correct documents;
ability to provide excellent customer service and answer a high volume of phone calls.
Ability to work well as a member of a team with little supervision.
Good oral and written communication skills are essential.
Experience in a regulatory environment.
Knowledge of regulations and office procedures.
Experience in word processing and other automated systems.
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a regulatory environment.
Additional Considerations
Experience in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel).
Experience working with customers on the phone and in person.
