Job Duties
Gunston Hall is a small museum with a highly collaborative, energetic staff dedicated to the power of place, historical objects, and storytelling to create meaningful experiences for visitors of all ages. We offer an exciting opportunity for an energetic and action-oriented professional to join our team in the development and maintenance of garden and historic landscapes on our 550-acre historic site. Having recently adopted a twenty-year Campus Master Plan and reconstructed the historic riverside garden at Gunston Hall, we are seeking a passionate and collaborative part-time Gardener with the vision, expertise, and ability to continue to establish the one-acre riverside garden.
The mission of George Mason’s Gunston Hall is to stimulate the exploration and understanding of principles expressed by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.
Incumbent is responsible for:
• Cultivating gardens with appropriate plants; planting and caring for them with watering, weeding, pruning, and pest and weed control.
• Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and Operations and works in concert with the Horticulturist to select cultivars and plant them at the appropriate time and in the right locations.
• Prunes and fertilizes shrubs and assists with grounds maintenance.
• Supports the interpretation of the Gunston Hall gardens to the public as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of basic horticultural practices.
• Experience with planting and maintaining flower or vegetable gardens.
• Ability to apply pesticides and herbicides.
• Must have transportation.
Additional Considerations
• Knowledge of historic plants and cultivation practices, is a plus.
• Experience in interpreting the historic landscape or gardens for the
public, is a plus.
