Job Duties

  • Support the revision of mathematics Standards of Learning in alignment with policy requirements and effective, research-based practices for developing and revising mathematics standards.
  • Support the development or revision of instructional guides.
  • Support effective implementation of mathematics SOL program.
  • Support the identification and implementation of HQIM for mathematics.
  • Support the implementation of competency-based and evidence-based mathematics learning.
  • Provide recommendations to school divisions on best practices to improve student outcomes in mathematics.
  • Implement a framework for professional learning.
  • Facilitate professional learning experiences that supports improving student outcomes in mathematics as measured by state assessments.
  • Support the process of assessment item development, standard setting, and duties connected to developing and implementing state assessments for mathematics.
  • Collaborate with approved educator preparation programs to support alignment of preparation experiences with state expectations for mathematics instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to use data to inform support to schools and school divisions.
  • Knowledge of effective practices to advance numeracy and developmental progress from fundamental concepts to advanced skills in mathematics including number and operational sense, algebraic reasoning, geometric reasoning, and reasoning with data and statistics.
  • Knowledge of effective practices for mathematics instruction.
  • Ability to support the identification and implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) for the assigned region.
  • Knowledge of the role of mathematics in Virginia’s accountability program focusing on SOL, curriculum and instructional practices, and local, state, and federal education policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective practices for engaging adult learners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across divisions.
  • Ability to engage with stakeholder groups and use information from stakeholders to inform continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate strong project management and time management skills.
  • Expertise in data-informed decision making and continuous improvement models.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology tools and skills and their application for student learning.
  • Proficiency in the use of applications in the Microsoft Office suite.

Additional Considerations

  • An advanced degree in mathematics, curriculum, or a related area from an accredited college or university.
