Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is hiring a Scales Technician for a position with its Facilities Services division in Richmond, VA.
The Scales Technician, reporting to the Technical Services Manager, is responsible for evaluating, maintaining, and certifying weighing equipment used across Virginia to support DMV’s mission. This role ensures all devices are accurately calibrated and compliant with state and federal standards, overseeing installation, repair, and preventive maintenance at state facilities. Additionally, the Scales Technician manages critical parts inventory. This role is essential for accurate weight enforcement, protecting roadways, and ensuring public safety.

Minimum Qualifications
•In-depth knowledge of state and federal weight regulations, including FMCSA guidelines and truck weighing policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance in vehicle operations.
•Hands-on experience diagnosing, repairing, and calibrating mechanical and electronic weighing systems, including portable and permanent systems.
•Experience maintaining accurate records, managing data, and preparing reports in compliance with regulatory standards, using PC applications for data entry, collection, and analysis.
•Experience collaborating with external vendors for purchasing, repairing, or replacing specialized equipment in a transportation or enforcement context.
•Familiarity with towing utility trailers and operating large vehicles in various conditions,
•Strong understanding of electronic and mechanical scale systems, including diagnostic techniques and maintenance processes, ensuring the accuracy and functionality of weighing systems.
•Mechanical aptitude for testing, diagnosing, and repairing weighing equipment to ensure it meets legal standards.
• Lift and carry up to 50-100lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks required for equipment maintenance and operations.
Additional Considerations
•Ability to effectively use hand tools, grinders, welders, and other repair equipment to maintain and repair weighing systems, ensuring equipment remains functional and safe.
•Familiarity with DMV policies and motor carrier regulations, particularly as they pertain to weigh stations and enforcement operations.
•Proficiency in using specialized DMV systems for enforcing weight compliance, issuing citations, and managing data.
•Eligibility for Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services technician certification.
•Eligibility for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
