Job Duties

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Welding Program Leader. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center provides access to higher education, workforce training and programming, innovative industry services, and technologically advanced state-of-the-art facilities and learning labs that include comprehensive fiscal management, operational and supportive services, community outreach and engagement, and extensive collaborations. These components work together to support the organization’s mission of advancing Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration. The Welding Program Leader is responsible for the strategic oversight and operational management of the agency’s comprehensive welding training program. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, industry-aligned instruction that prepares learners for professional certifications and employment. Serving as the onsite welding subject matter expert, the leader fosters strong partnerships with employers, learners, and community stakeholders to support workforce development and economic growth.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable working knowledge of introductory and advanced welding techniques, processes, practices, equipment, tools, supplies and industry quality standards; Considerable experience as a teacher or technical trainer; Considerable experience teaching various levels of welding to diverse populations; Considerable experience complying to OSHA standards Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and teach multiple levels of quality welding courses and provide relevant hands-on training for learners; Working knowledge of providing effective budget management and oversight; Demonstrated ability to engage with and develop positive working relationships with employers, learners, and other stakeholders; Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with diverse audiences; Demonstrated ability to provide supervision to subordinate staff; Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records; Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Experience working successfully as part of a team.

Additional Considerations

Professional Welding Certification/Certificate from the American Welding Society (AWS), American Society of Mechnical Engineers (ASME) or American Petroleum Institute (API). Instructor or teaching credentials and/or related train-the-trainer/facilitation certification. National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) or related industry recognized credential(s). OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 safety certification. Knowledge and skills in project/program management.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain the American Welding Society (AWS), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Petroleum Institute (API), NCCER or other relevant instructor or teaching credentials and/or related train-the-trainer/facilitation certification within twelve months of hire.
