The Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking dedicated information systems professionals to join our Information Systems & Services (ISS) team. As a central administrative agency, DGS provides a variety of specialized services to government agencies, businesses and citizens, ensuring the effective operations of state government functions.

As a Systems Administrator your role will support critical infrastructure, resolve performance issues, and ensure secure, stable application environments. This role is key to maintaining business continuity and advancing DGS’s mission through reliable technology support.

Job duties include, but are not limited to: 

  •  Administering and supporting server, application, and desktop environments across development, test, and production.
  • Assisting with configuration, upgrade, and patching of server and software components, including third-party applications.
  • Supporting system integrations, performance tuning, and issue resolution across application layers.
  • Collaborating with teams on new application builds, change implementations, and system documentation.
  • Administering web servers (e.g., IIS), certificates (SSL, x509), and related frameworks.
  • Creating and maintaining scripts to automate tasks and support server operations.
  • Participating in disaster recovery planning and execution, including server and infrastructure restoration.
  • Providing responsive technical support and communicating effectively with stakeholders during urgent or off-hour events.

This position will be located in Richmond, Virginia and must report on-site. This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule (telework up to 2 days/week) upon completion of an approved telework agreement and satisfactory performance period.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving performance and interoperability problems between system and application components, as well as application configuration issues
  • Experience in the installation and validation of upgrade and patching of software and hardware components, including 3rd party vendor applications
  • Experience in shell scripting
  • Experience supporting SQL, Oracle, RHEL
  • Documented practical experience in change management implementation and administration
  • Thorough knowledge of server and desktop operating systems, including Windows Server 2016 and up, Windows 10 and up.
  • Solid understanding of networking and protocols (HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP, POP3, DHCP, DNS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to execute IT disaster recovery plans and solutions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a multi-functional team in situations with changing priorities.
